Ledge – Similar to a box but may be only one-sided or without a wide top surface The flat top is often used for manual tricks.įlat rail – A straight round or rectangular metal rail for grinding and sliding. A box or “fun box” almost always has coping on the long sides for grinds and slides. These include the following:īox – A rectangular wood or concrete element that is usually 2-3 feet wide, 1-2 feet high and 3-6 feet long. There are many other types of obstacles that can be grouped into the skate ramp family. Occasionally you might see two kicker ramps facing each other with a gap in the middle These commonly include pyramid-shaped ramps. There are many combinations ramps that involve two or more banked ramps at different angles. Wooden mini ramps are a common feature at indoor skateparks, but concrete versions are also often found at outdoor skateparks. A mini ramp’s height can be anywhere between 2 feet and 6 or 7 feet. They are usually between 8 feet and 16 feet wide. A mini ramp is essentially a small version of a half pipe. Like half pipes, mini ramps feature two walls of transitions and a flat bottom. There is always metal coping that runs along the length of a half pipe. ![]() They are usually made from wood, though some concrete versions can be seen at larger skateparks. The walls of a half pipe always reach 90 degrees or “vertical.” Half pipes can be anywhere from about 7 feet to 14 feet high, though most are in the 10-12 foot range. ![]() ![]() A half pipe consists of two “walls” and a flat bottom. Many top-tier pro skaters have shaped their career around the halfpipe, most notable Tony Hawk. Half pipes or “vert ramps” are seldom seen at public skateparks, but an entire sect of skateboarding revolves around vert skating. You’ll often see at skateparks some sort of banked concrete ramp that functions as both a launch ramp and a quarter pipe. Some ramps have just the right pitch to where you can launch out or choose to roll back in. Mega ramps, often seen at the X-Games, feature a quarter pipe that is 20-30 feet high. You can go to many skateparks and find quarter pipes that are much higher than this. You can buy quarter pipes for your home that are a couple feet high and 4 to 8 feet wide. The purpose of a quarter pipe is to do a trick at the top of the ramp, either on the coping or in the air, and then come back down.Ī quarter pipe can literally be almost any size. In other words, by the time you reach the top of the ramp, the nose of your board will be close to pointing straight up. Quarter pipes, by definition, approach a 90 degree angle (and sometimes meet it). They once again can be made of most materials. Quarter pipes are very often seen at all types of skateparks. Once you’ve gotten some experience skateboarding and are comfortable with the smaller types of ramps, a quarter pipe would be the next thing you might want to approach. A launch ramp can have various “exit angles” though they are usually going to be 60 degrees or less. Like the name implies, it’s meant to launch you a bit higher than a kicker ramp would. What makes a launch ramp different is that its slope has a degree of curvature. Similar to kickers, a launch ramp can be both a movable element and also an attached feature of a skatepark. Concrete kicker ramps are a common feature at skateparks and are often connected or close to a nearby rail or ledge. Portable kicker ramps are usually around 2-3 feet long and made from wood, plastic or some other composite materials. Relative to the ground, a kicker ramp’s surface is typically banked at about 15-30 degrees. They essentially consist of a bank or slope at a straight angle. One of the most basic types of skateboard ramps are kickers. If you are new to skating, the following tips will guide on the types of skate ramps and the decision of whether to purchase or build them yourself. I use a as the "entry point" for nearly all my Hammerspoon based automation. My most common use of a is to launch an application, so I have a table of applications that I can define a "hyper key" for, and optionally some local bindings that I bind inside that application to use globally. hyper : bind (, 'r', nil, function () hs. Press `HYPER+r`, get the Hammerspoon console. Because your "hyper key" is not a cluster of modifier keys, you can actually use it in conjunction with any normal modifiers. One big advantage to using Hammerspoon as a "man-in-the-middle" is using modifiers with your hyper key. Brett Terpstra first wrote about this in "A Useful Caps Lock Key" in 2012. In this as in all things, I am not the first. Instead of having every single application listening to all the keystrokes, I can control it one place. I use a single often-unused key (in my case, F19) to trigger a hs.hotkey.modal in Hammerspoon. In my case, Hammerspoon becomes a single "router" to all the automation and UI customization on my Mac. Using a single keycode as your "hyper" key, and handling the translation at the automation layer is much more expressive. Because of this a lot of hyper key setups are limited to "leader key" style interactions. Using the "hyper chord" as the entire "hyper key", you can't add any more modifiers, because it is already all the modifiers. While it works well, it has its limitations. You can absolutely do this in Hammerspoon if you want. The user would then use some kind of automation software like Alfred or Keyboard Maestro to listen for the "hyper chord" and fire different automations. Traditionally, a Hyper key is implemented by sending to the Operating System "hyper chord" of ⌘⌥⇧⌃ by modifying the keyboard firmware or using Karabiner-elements.app. The code isn't that complex so this post will be focused on the advantages of this approach. I'm using hs.hotkey.modal to capture an F19 keystroke, and only sending the "hyper chord" of ⌘⌥⇧⌃ if absolutely required. At the moment, my hyper implementation is contained in a lua module called a, with some dependencies on Karabiner-Elements.app. I talked in the last post about my history with the concept, how I learned from Steve Losh's post on the topic and borrowed from Brett Terpstra… and I've expanded the idea a bit. You can write Lua code that interacts with OS X APIs for applications, windows, mouse pointers, filesystem objects, audio devices, batteries, screens, low-level keyboard/mouse events, clipboards, location services, wifi, and more. This is very hard to describe succinctly. What gives Hammerspoon its power is a set of extensions that expose specific pieces of system functionality, to the user.
